Scope and Contents This series consists of the earliest correspondence made by President Bergemann regarding operations of the synod at large. Bergemann attempted to group documents from major correspondents and kept a file for more than 100 individuals. Important cases were given their own file. Infrequent correspondence was arranged alphabetically.

Series 2: General Correspondence, 1913 - 1933

Scope and Contents In late 1914, Bergemann seems to abandon his personal filing system in favor of a system that strictly alphabetical. This series consists of all correspondence made by President Bergemann prior to the merger of 1917 and general correspondence of a non-district nature up to the end of his presidency. Sub-series a, b, and c are annual series for the years 1915, 1916, and 1917, respectively. They contain the entirety of Bergemann’s correspondence. Scope and Contents In late 1917, the newly merged synod organized into six districts. By 1920, the synod had grown from six districts to eight with the inclusion of the Pacific Northwest District and the Dakota Montana District.* Bergemann used this district structure to organize the greatest share of his correspondence from 1918 until the end of his presidency.
