The COP has responsibility in the following areas: supervising, maintaining, and strengthening the unity of doctrine and practice; overseeing and coordinating the calling process; working with congregations to care and provide for the spiritual and physical needs of called workers; encouraging congregations and individuals to provide for the financial support of the synod; and promoting the mission and ministry of the synod in the districts. The COP is also responsible for assigning graduates of WELS ministerial education schools to their first congregations and schools. The COP meets at least four times annually.
